·         This year’s NFPA Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 3rd-9th, “Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With!”, provides an ideal opportunity to educate the public about smoke alarm recommendations, and can serve as a powerful tool for motivating people to install smoke alarms, as needed, and to make sure they’re working and tested properly.

  • There is an ICC National Certification Examination and FEE66 Fire Inspector I Based on 2006 International Codes testing for new inspectors scheduled.  The next test will be held at the Ocean County Fire Academy, 200 Volunteer Way, Waretown, NJ, 08758, Site Code 5186.  The exam date is December 11, 2010, 8:00 a.m. and the deadline to register is November 12, 2010.  The cost of the exam is $180.  The information bulletin may be obtained from ICC at www.iccsafe.org/exams or call 1-888-422-7233, ext. 5524.  This information is also posted on the DFS Website at www.state.nj.us/dca/dfs .

  • As a result of a recent safety alert issued by the National Fire Protection Association, the Division is finalizing a bulletin regarding antifreeze in existing fire sprinkler systems.  The safety alert recommends owners and contractors review the status of their existing systems, specifically the levels of antifreeze in systems.  This advisory bulletin will be sent out in the very near future. Additional information may be obtained from NFPA at: http://www.nfpa.org/itemDetail.asp?categoryID=2064&itemID=48038.

  • It has been brought to the Division of Fire Safety’s attention that Wal-Mart stores may have directed their employees to inspect the sprinklers in place of a contractor, as a cost saving method.   Please pay particular attention to this possibility when reviewing test reports and conducting your inspections.  This practice is clearly in violation of the NJ Uniform Fire Code specifically NFPA 25.  If you observe this operation being conducted in your LEA, please notify your DFS Local Assistance Representative as soon as possible.
